43 Years of Homelessness Ended
This week, Bags of Grace is celebrating the end of 43 years of homelessness for one of our beloved Neighbors!
Our Neighbor, a former lawn care business owner and longtime friend of Bags of Grace, has always struggled with crowds and unfamiliar people. Despite these challenges, you can find him helping with everything from unloading Bags of Grace from our trailer to taking out the trash at the various pantries he frequents, and more, demonstrating his kindness and generosity.
However, for many years, this Neighbor made his home near Austin's Barton Creek, often sleeping on a bench and enjoying a dip in the springs. When a permanent residence became available to him, he declined the opportunity, saying he felt safe living outdoors. Not long after he committed to continue living outdoors, another homeless man, whose presence did make him uncomfortable, settled near his regular camp spot. Reflecting on his years without a home, he shared that the hardest part of his journey was the constant threat from people preying on others.
Now, with a set of house keys in his hand, he looks forward to the peace of mind that comes with sleeping safely and the simple joy of cooking homemade chicken noodle soup in his own kitchen. He even plans to move a bench to his new front porch, so when he feels the need to sleep outside again, he can from the safety of his own home.
Though humble and private, Our Neighbor understands that sharing his story may inspire others.
Welcome home, Neighbor!
