From Her Car to Our Table: How God Orchestrated a Meeting Under the Overpass
This past Sunday at Church Under the Bridge, we arrived early, just like we always do—my daughter and I, with boxes of Bags of Grace to distribute. The sun hadn’t quite pushed through the haze above the overpass in downtown Austin, but we’d already handed out nearly a hundred Bags of Grace before the Mission Possible’s Church Under the Bridge service even began.
As the sermon started, I stood near the water dispenser, taking in the words being shared. That’s when I saw her—a beautiful woman, dressed like she might’ve been heading to church, walking toward me with her two young children. The littlest one couldn’t have been more than three.
She looked at me, a bit unsure, and asked, “What’s going on here?”
I told her about the church service, a little bit about Bags of Grace, and about our mutual mission to show up in love to serve our Neighbors in need.
She smiled, eyes wide with awe. “God told me to make bags of food to feed the hungry,” she said. “I didn’t know where to go, but I packed up my kids and we started driving. We could not find anyone. Then we saw this.”
He led her straight to us.
Together, we brought out her bags—dozens of them, filled with bright tangerines, bottles of Gatorade—even cheerful little bags of Cheetos. I could tell each of her bags was packed with care, with kindness, with obedience.
There we were—two women who had never met, standing side by side under an overpass, both called by the same God to the same mission. She didn’t know about Church Under the Bridge or Bags of Grace. She didn’t plan to join us. But He did.
It was a holy moment—a reminder that when we say “yes,” God brings the pieces together in ways we never could. That morning, we weren’t just passing out bags. We were passing out grace, basically hand in hand with a stranger who somehow felt like family.
We are grateful for all our volunteers and donors who partner with us in serving our Neighbors. Join us for our next large group assembly or become a recurring donor to take the next step in His mission to love the “least of these.”
