When a Neighbor Sees the Heart of Our Mission

When We See Christ in Each Other

At Bags of Grace Ministries, our heart has always been that when we serve one another, we are truly serving Jesus. It’s not just a phrase we say—it’s at the heart of everything we do. This week at the Charlie Center, I had a moment that reminded me why this mission matters so deeply.

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink... Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.
— Matthew 25: 35-40

Mission Moment

This past Wednesday, I was moved to tears to witness May, though currently unhoused and part of our community at The Charlie Center, embrace the heart of our mission so fully. She had just received a Bag of Grace, yet she saw more than the items inside—she recognized the love behind it and her own community as the very presence of Jesus. In God’s perfect timing, she happened to be wearing a shirt that boldly declared, “Serving others is serving Christ.” With conviction, she began sharing the truth she saw revealed in front of her with those around her—that we are all made in Christ’s image.

Watching her—as both recipient and witness—was an experience I will never forget.

It’s one thing for our leadership team to articulate the mission — it’s another, far more powerful thing, when our Neighbors and volunteers carry it forward themselves.

The Need Is Still Great

While I was watching May, something else happened that affirmed not only our mission in work but the need in our community. A partner ministry in our area Reveal Ministries had blessed us with a banana box full of hygiene kits to distribute at The Charlie Center that day. I had set the box on the distribution table, and when I turned back around, they were all gone—taken quickly by Neighbors who needed them most.

Moments like this are sobering. They remind us, there is still much work to do, and that the need in our community is urgent.

We are so grateful for our volunteers, donors, and partners who see Christ in those we serve and help us meet needs with dignity and love. When we work together, we don’t just hand out food, water, or hygiene kits—we share hope, faith, and the presence of Jesus Himself.

We are grateful for all our volunteers and donors who partner with us in serving our Neighbors. Join us for our next large group assembly or become a recurring donor to take the next step in His mission to love the “least of these.”
